Inner Fillet Design Requirements

Each machine has fixed internal structural boundaries that determine the maximum size of blanks. Owing to rotary axes installation, multi-axis centers sacrifice part of travel space, resulting in a smaller effective processing area than 3-axis milling machines.

For 3-axis CNC machining, machining features distributed across multiple planes will raise overall production costs. It is strongly recommended to integrate holes and all structural features onto a single plane during part design.

The diameters of drilled holes and internal threads are advised to match standard drill taps and threading cutters. As a general design principle, hole depth ought not to exceed ten times its inner diam.

To effectively avoid cutter vibration, tool deflection and other processing defects, the depth of milled cavities is recommended to be controlled within four times the cavity width.

Adopt larger radii for internal rounded corners, so large-diameter cutting tools can be adopted for machining. To protect cutting tools from breakage, the inner fillet radius needs to be larger than one-third of the cavity depth.
